Two Small Silver Plates with Crosses: 7th century AD

The Roman habit of decorating plates in precious metals with images of gods and goddesses was later adopted by Christians. Christian decoration co-existed with mythological subjects in early Christian silverware. These little plates were probably for domestic use, and formed part of a dinner service. Such vessels were imitated in cheaper, mass-produced pottery, examples of which were even imported into western Britain, reaching sites like Tintagel, Cornwall.
