Bronze Foot-Shaped Oil-Lamp: 5th century AD |
The bronze oil-lamp is in the form of a right foot in a sandal. The sole of the sandal bears an incised cross and the Greek name THYRSOU ("of Thyrsos"). This is a very accurate depiction of a late Roman sandal such as would have beem worn in late Roman times in all three countries. Curiously enough, feet and shoes were popular forms for a variety of Roman objects, including lamps and brooches.
