Bronze Standing Lamp: 6th or 7th century AD |
The copper-alloy lamp on a stand has an elaborate openwork handle in the form of a double coiling rod with a small cross. The use of animal forms in the decoration of bronze vessels continued to be popular after late Roman times. The three feet of the lamp imitate horses hooves, with horseshoes. The lamp is dated by its tubular shape. A very similar lamp in the British Museum is thought to be from Egypt.
