Large Bronze Ewer or Pitcher from Saqqah in Egypt: 7th century AD |
The large bronze ewer has incised decoration depicting running animals and stylised floral designs. The central row of animals seems to show a hunt scene. An inscription in Greek is incised on the lid, reading EULOGIA KYRIOU ("God's blessing").
Such ewers were used for pouring water into hand-washing bowls at table. Metal vessels like this were the models for Medieval ceramic jugs found in Setúbal, Portugal.
