Bronze Nail-cleaner from Swalcliffe, Oxfordshire: 3rd century

The nail-cleaner with loop for attachment to a ring or handle has become detached from an original set with tweezers and ear-scoop, apparently a standard possession in Britain during the Roman period and found on numerous sites

Unlike our modern version, the Romano-British nail-cleaner had a double-pointed end.

This implement comes from an excavation carried out in 1977 on the site of a probable Roman villa at Swalcliffe. Pottery and finds from the Swalcliffe site were dated to the second half of the 3rd century.
