| Slippers and Buskins: Details from the Altarpiece of Setúbal,Jorge Afonso's workshop. 1520-1530 AD |
Shoes were worn directly over the breeches, which terminated in feet, and were soft, easily worn-out articles compared with our modern street shoes. The shoes or slippers shown in the Resurrection of Christ panel are tied with fancy gold laces, but look similar to the Medieval leather shoes from Oxford.
A detail from the Deposition panel also shows buskins being worn over the breeches, from ankle to knee, for extra protection.
