Surcoat: Details from the Setúbal Altarpiece, 1520-1530 AD

These two details from the panels showing Christ being nailed to the cross, and the Resurrection, show heavilly-dressed men with surcoats and overcoats. These were similar garments but the overcoat was made with loose parts holding together by strings. It was made with thick tissue, sometimes doubled, and leather.
