Cloak or Mantle: Details from the Setúbal Altarpiece, Jorge Afonso's workshop, 1520-1530 AD


The two details show the cloak or mantle, the universal outer garment for travel and bad weather. The detail from the Adoration of the Magi panel illustrates the plain fabric of the cloak, irrespective of the richness of the garments below; there are slits for the rich jerkin to poke through. The detail from the Christ and Veronica panel shows a hooded mantle with its own sleeves.
