Jewellery: Details from the Setúbal Altarpiece,Jorge Afonso's workshop, 1520-1530 AD

Numerous details from the altarpiece show that men wore elaborate personal jewels, especially rings, and jewels adorning rich garments (two details from the Adoration of the Magi panel) and pendants (Calvary panel). The earrings and necklace seen on the black youth in the Adoration panel may not normally have been worn by men, but presumably are based upon period gems, perhaps for women.
