Modular Clay Water-pipe from Alcochete near Setúbal: 1st-2nd centuries AD

Roman architecture was characterised by the most sophisticated plumbing and heating before modern times. Specially designed clay tile elements carried heating throughout the house, water to the house from nearby aqueducts, and drainage away from the house under the streets.

This complete pipe element is designed to fit tightly into identical elements at either end.
