Gaming Pieces and Sharpener made of re-used Amphora Fragments: 1st-3rd centuries AD

The great quantities of amphorae made and used in the Setúbal area provided a major source of recyclable material, as the hard-fired clay was almost indestructible.

The two gaming pieces look as though they could have been quickly shaped on the spot during a break from work, for a game of draughts.

The sharpener, or whetstone, on the other hand is carefully shaped to fit the palm of the hand, and has been much used.
