![]() | Fragments of Amphorae with Inscriptions, from Alcochete near Setúbal: 1st to 3rd centuries AD |
It seems that many ordinary people were literate during the Roman Empire. It was common for potters to stamp amphorae on the handle with their name (or that of the owner of the pottery).
Painted and scratched letters often found on the bodies of amphorae might describe their contents or "batch".
