Tiled Pavement from the Convent of Jesus: 15th century AD

Islamic influence and Faience pottery of Medieval times in Spain and Portugal resulted in the development of the gorgeously coloured and patterned architectural tiles (azulejos) for which Portugal is still known.

From the 15th century, Valencia in Spain was one of the main centres of production; the ceramic tiles used to decorate the lavabo or washbasin in the cloister at the Convent of Jesus were imported from Valencia and known as Rajolas.
