![]() | Silver Bottle for Holy Oil, from Santa Casa da Misericordia, Setúbal: 16th century AD |
Single piece with a narrow bottle neck and dilated belly. No other examples are known in Portugal.
The engraved decoration includes two latin inscriptions (EIC ANS DEI QI TOLIS PECATA MVDI MIZE and CRUCIS ERIT IN HOC SIGNUM) and two representations of the Calvary.
The shape is identical to some pieces of pottery imported from China to Portugal in the middle of the 16th century.
