Leather Case for the Crystal Processional Cross, from Santa Casa da Misericórdia, Setúbal: second half of the 15th century AD |
Case purposely made to keep processional cross made of crystal and golden silver, second half 15th century. The case is shaped like the cross and one may notice the arms and the spherical knot, in the centre of the inferior pole. Two boxes (one inside the other) make this case of leather and by a wood frame in the inside of the arms.
The inscription, engraved on the leather in gothic letters reads: Senhora Virgem Santa Maria Lebrate do Teu Devoto Nuno Goncalves.
King John II's chancellor, Nuno Gonçalves gave this set (case with the cross inside), to the Brotherhood of Senhora Anunciada of Setúbal in the second half of the 15th century.
