Beds: Three Details from the Setúbal Altarpiece, 1520-1530 AD

The Chamber was the most intimate place in the 16th-century house, the place to sleep, eat and receive someone in private.

The bed had its dossel or canopy opened during the day to show the richness of the bedclothes and pillows. The detail from the Annunciation panel shows fringed bolster and pillows; the detail from St John and the Child, metallic ornaments with tassels, and the detail from Christ appearing to the Virgin, a circular canopy.
