![]() | Candlestick: Detail from the Setúbal Altarpiece, 1520-1530 AD |
The brass candlestick with wax candle had now replaced the clay oil-lamp for carrying round the house and to the bedchamber. The multiple, wide rims would catch the quantities of wax dripping from an irregular, handmade candle and prevent it falling on expensive carpets and hangings. The detail comes from the panel of Christ appearing to the Virgin.
