From the 15th to the 19th century, during the periods of European exploration and empire-building, people from Africa were kidnapped and traded and brought to Europe as slaves, and taken to North America as slaves. But the greatest movements happened in the 20th century. In post-war Britain, African-Caribbean people were encouraged to emigrate and work in the service industries, and following the collapse of the Portuguese empire in 1974 many Africans chose to live in Portugal.
