The
Jewish Museum of Greece was founded in 1977 with the aim to preserve the memory
and reconstruct the history of Jewish culture in Greece. Twenty years later, in
March 1998, the museum acquired its own building which houses a permanent collection
of objects and documents reflecting the everyday life, customs and traditions
of the Greek Jews. The
collection of the Jewish Museum of Greece is constantly enriched with new acquisition.
It consists of more than 7000 artifacts of rare religious value and historical
importance. These items depict the lifestyle and activities of both the Romaniote
and the Sephardic Jews of Greece. The Jewish Museum of Greece is rated today as
one of the four most important Jewish museums in Europe. The
Jewish Museum of Greece has a rich library and extensive photographic archive,
which have been at the disposal of the public for the synthesis of important documented
studies such as the collection of Sephardic proverbs, the collection and recording
of Romaniote religious and popular music, as well as the collection of recipes
and gastronomic traditions of the local Jewish cuisine. The
museum also organises periodic special exhibitions, collaborates with Greek and
foreign museums, institutions and organisations, undertakes the recording and
photographing of Jewish monuments, synagogues and cemeteries threatened by the
ravages of time and the decimation of Greek Jewish communities. Prisma Prisma
