During World War II Italian prisoners of war were housed in Oxfordshire. One Italian prisoner expressed his longing for home by painting blue sky and sailing ships in a bottle. Despite Oxfordshire's agricultural landscape and grey skies, prisoners of war were impressed with their treatment in England and many chose to remain after the war. Seen here also are photographs of Spanish refugee children in Oxfordshire, 1945.
