The
sepia photograph of the 1880s showing Banbury High Street is
contained in a raised, moss-green plush-covered mount. Plush
was a luxury silken fabric made in north Oxfordshire, especially
at Shutford. The industry is thought to have been imported into
this country in the 18th century through the settlement of French
Huguenots. persecuted at home for their beliefs.
Wolvercote
Green, Oxford, a watercolour painting by J A Shuffrey. Like
a number of other Oxfordshire artists and writers, Shuffrey
was descended from creative European emigrants to this area;
his father and grandfather were dyers and weavers in Witney.
Shuffrey's son was also an artist, and his Grandson a photographer,
early 20th century.
