The
Roma, people identified with a nomadic lifestyle, are differentiated
from the native population by their clothes. Nowadays examples from
Greece show that they often adopt the natives' attire. Traditionally,
the Roma women wore wide pantalon-like underwear (sousten), wide
chinz skirts, a tight multicolor blouse (bolka), kerchief and also
jewelry with beads and coins. The impressive female Roma dress remained
isolated from Greek and more generally European fashion, apart from
the 1970s skirts that imitated the gypsy ones. They are fond of
bright colours and do not care for conventional combinations. Roma
and Greeks have several common dress customs and beliefs, such as
wearing a blue stone amulet for protection against the Evil Eye.
