ROMA
The Roma, originating from India and associated with a nomadic lifestyle,
arrived in the Byzantine Empire in the 11th c. In the 14th c. Roma
communities were already settled permanently in Greece, mainly in
the regions under Venetian rule. Their presence in Greece is extensive
even today.
The
Roma are mainly Christian Orthodox, although Muslim Roma communities
do exist, especially in Thrace, converted to Islam during the Ottoman
Empire. Contemporary research suggests that they wish to settle
permanently. Furthermore, we can observe their gradual movement
from rural areas to the periphery of urban centres.
